This is a senior seminar for motivated students. We will be reading and discussing a selection of poems, essays, stories and plays about ecology—the variety of relations between humans and nonhumans in the Anthropocene, this current era when no place on earth is free from impact of human activity and presence. We will consider a range of ideas about the current problems such as climate change, animal extinction, pollution, and overpopulation. We will also look at the range of solutions—inventions of new foods and materials, animal rights, green architecture, and eco-volunteerism. We will use the texts to discuss what role literature plays in our perceptions about ecology in our lives. The reading packet will be available in the Copy Center in the B Building. |

BEN 238 01 Ecoliterature Ecoliterature is a new discipline in which we read literary works to gain new understanding of the natural world in the Anthropocene (人類世). Human beings impact all aspects of nature—air, land, water—and all the plants and animals. We need to understand the dimensions of that impact in order to be more aware and careful of how we live in a finite world. Reading literature can help us understand the complexity of the problems and also possible solutions; the situation is both depressing and exciting. We will discuss the difference between nature literature and ecoliterature. Students will be encouraged Asian views of nature regarding the changes in the Anthropocene. A reading packet of poems, essays, stories will be used in class. Students’ requirements: Weekly attendance, reading assignments, and participation 10% Keeping an “eco-journal” 25% Presenting an oral report on one of the readings 25% Midterm and Final Exams 40% In Class Rules: 1.
