三、教學目標 Objectives
本課程分為兩部分，第一部份主要探討希臘哲學，第二部分則以從笛卡兒到休謨的近代哲學發展為主題。教學目標主要在於使學生藉由對西洋古典哲學的認識，一方面逐步培養基本的哲學論述能力，另一方面亦能掌握西方近代思想與古典哲學之聯繫。
This course will introduce Greek philosophers from Thales to Aristotle, and modern philosophers from Descartes to Hume. Through acquaintance with these philosophers, students will get a primary access to Western philosophy. Moreover, this course will pay a special attention to the cultivation of students in their capabilities of philosophical reasoning.

本學期課程以討論下列哲學家的思想為主：
1） 前蘇格拉底（先蘇）時期哲學：米利都學派、依利亞學派、畢達哥拉斯學派。
2） 詭辯家與蘇格拉底。
3） 柏拉圖：
相關主題：a) 知識論─知識與意見、共相論
b) 形上學─理型論
c) 道德理論與人性論
d) 政治哲學─哲學家國王與理想國家之建立
4） 亞里斯多德：
相關主題：a) 以經驗主義為基礎之知識論
b) 形上學─對柏拉圖理型論之批判、形式與材料、四因說、
c) 神學─不動之自動因
d) 倫理學─幸福理論、德性論
e) 邏輯思想
5）近代理性主義：笛卡兒
6）英國經驗論：洛克、柏克萊、休謨
