The main topic of this seminar course is concerned with how is possible to shape a political order in modern democracy . The development of modern democracy shows to us the essential characterists of democracy, one of which consists in a variety of political and social conflicts. Without conflicts, there world be no democracy, we may say. Although this essential characteristic of democracy can be viewed as an apparatus agaist the domination of political power, however, if we accept the stability, and harmonious order is constituded as the condition for our good life, we need to think about how is possible to fashion a stable politica-social order in democracy. To explain this basic question, this course proposes to read and discuss following works:
(i) Concerning the ideal of popular sovereignty and its pathology in democracy, this course will read and discuss Jan-Werner Müller, What is Populism?(Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2016).
(ii) Concerning about the conflicts in democracy and the possibility of resolving them, this course will read and discuss Paul Randolph, The Psychology of Conflict: Mediating in a Diverse World, (London: Bloomsbury, 2016).
(iii) Concerning the basic values of democracy, liberty and equality, this course will focus on the issues of equality in theory and practice. As regards to these issues, this course will read and discuss Pierre Rosanvallon, The Society of Equals, trans by Arthur Goldhammer (Cambrighe, Massachusetts, Harvard University Press, 2013).
