三、教學目標 Objectives
本課研究人權歷史的一些重要文獻。每學年可以配合學生的興趣選不同重點，為第一年，我們先研究中國情末民初知識分子如何了解人權，同時看他們所使用的文獻在其原有的文化背景中。中國方面我們特別重視嚴復、梁啟超、高一漢、陳獨秀等人；西方方面，我們要看法國大革命與美國獨立運動以及其思想背景，也看十九世紀彌爾及伊耶陵、社會達爾文思想以及拉斯基的思想。最後我們會表演易卜生的《傀儡家庭》。

希望每位同學專制於某學者的一、兩篇文章，深度了解其文化與社會背景，並寫專題論文討論所選的文獻。
This course will look at key texts from the history of human rights. The theme can be varied according to students’ interests. I propose to take some of the key enlightenment thinkers and see how they were presented in Chinese scholarship of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In the Chinese context the authors we will be concerned with are Yan Fu, Liang Qichao, Gao Yihan, Chen Duxiu and others. From the Western tradition we will look particularly at the French and American revolutionary texts and their philosophical background and also at the nineteenth century thinkers such as Mill, Jhering, Social Darwinism and Laski. We will end with a presentation of Ibsen’s The Doll’s House.

Students will be expected to choose one particular author, either Chinese or Western, as the focus for the semester and present a comprehensive paper outlining the main features of a particular text by that author, in its historical and social setting.
