三、教學目標 Objectives
Children’s Literature explores issues young people face as they grow, mature, and come of age, such as identity formation, individuals’ positions within power structures, and sexual awakening. In its mass-marketed form, children’s books can be conventional and formulaic, but better works are often sites of experimentation with subject matter and literary form that make these works ideal for applications of narrative theory

Objectives:
1. Understand controversies involved with defining children’s literature as a genre and how different perspectives inform ways in which stories are told to young people.
2. Understand the forms in which literature for children is presented, from picture book to chapter book, poetry, folk story, and novel.
3. Understand complexities around defining the concept of childhood and its nature.
4. Learn how to see how children's literature constructs the child. 
四、課程內容 Course Description
整體敘述 Overall Description
This is a seminar class revolving around discussion of the reading materials. It is therefore imperative that students do the assigned reading and come to class with both questions and insights to share. Students will be given weekly reading assignments and study questions to help them prepare for classes.

The class will revolve around students own insights and questions.

In addition, students will read critical articles of their choice and children’s novels other than the assigned reading.

The first half of the semester will focus on understanding basic concepts of children’s literature and childhood. It will culminate with a 5 page paper on this topic and a midterm exam.
Students will work on one major project beginning after the midterm. This project will revolved around a book of your choice other than one of the class texts. In the process of completing this project, students will write a proposal, an annotated bibliography, and a 10-15 page final paper.
Each student will make a presentation to the class of the project in process.
