(請修課同學遵守智慧財產權,不得非法影印)
●指定教科書 Required Texts
Two texts are suggested as basic readings for the course—Mary Karr (Introduction), T.S. Eliot. The Waste Land and Other Writings. (New York: Modern Library), 2002; or Frank Kermode, ed. T.S. Eliot. The Waste Land and Other Poems.(New York and London: Penguin), 2003. The Kermode edition has some notes, which are helpful to students, but it does not include Eliot's critical essays. Students, however, can get the essays from other source.

三、教學目標 Objectives
The Eliot course will pretty much follow what I have offered this
term, with the exception of several additions. Thus it will be
divided into three parts. Part one covers the topic of Eliot in
relationship to modern poetry, including his critical essays
concerning four basic concepts: objective correlatives, impersonality,
tradition, and dissociation of sensibility. Part two discusses
Eliot's early poetic works from "Love Song" to "The Waste Land". Part
three focuses on his turning point as a dramatic poet. Students must
own a copy of Frank Kermode's edition of Eliot's poems. (Consult last
semester's required text.) One poetic drama and other critical essays
("Tradition and Individual Talent," "Hamlet and His Problems,' 'Three
Voices of Poetry," and "The Metaphysical Poets" will be distributed in
class.
四、課程內容 Course Description
整體敘述 Overall Description
The course intends to introduce students to the poetical and critical writings of T.S. Eliot’s early days, plus one or two plays. A general discussion of the influences of symbolism and imagism in relation to French and Anglo-American sources commences the course, ending with an evaluative assessment of Eliot’s contribution to modern poetry and criticism.
