三、教學目標 Objectives
The purposes of this course are to heighten understanding and appreciation of, as well as sensitivity to, diversity. Students are encouraged to explore how their own personal values, beliefs, and behavior may limit or expand their ability to understand and interact with people of diverse backgrounds - disadvantaged and oppressed people in particular. Therefore, the cognitive process and sensitivity will be emphasized in order to help students to clarify their attitudes and values dealing with self and others.
1. The course objectives are that the students shall:
a. Become aware of the impact of globalization and the relevant changes in the lives of individual, families, groups, and communities.
b. Develop greater awareness of their own cultural and ethnic identities, and of personal values, attitudes, and responses to human diversity. Understand how these may influence their interaction with others.
c. Have specific socio-historical knowledge about the experiences of diverse groups in Taiwan, including physically, socially, mentally, psychologically, and economically disadvantaged and oppressed people such as foreign labors/(immigrant) women/ethnic minorities/people with disabilities, gay and lesbian people/the poor.
d. Understand the impact of discrimination, economic deprivation, and oppression upon those disadvantaged groups; recognize that these may be contributing factors in the
problem-situation and may also need to be targets of change efforts.
e. Develop an appreciation for and learn how to draw upon the adaptive capabilities and strengths of those diverse groups.
f. Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity by exploring diversity within
the groups of students in the class.

2. The course objectives are that social work students, specifically, shall:
a. Understand why generalist social work practitioners must have specific
knowledge, values, and skills that enable them to serve culturally diverse
individuals, families, groups, and communities effectively.
b. Develop a general conceptual framework and theoretical perspectives for examining those diverse groups.
c. Demonstrate ability to clarify social work values in the context of dominant societal values and in light of minority values, and the ability to identify value conflicts and make informed value choices in cross-cultural practice situations.
d. Demonstrate ability to model social work values and the profession’s commitment to respect, and accept the unique characteristics of diverse groups so as to promote social and economic justice – especially for populations-at-risk and to combat racism, sexism, heterosexism, as well as other forms of oppression.
