Texts will be uploaded or handed out along with study questions and the location of viewing materials. Introductory lectures will be given for each new issue but the majority of the time will be spent discussing the play and performance.

三、教學目標 Objectives
Objective: First, to understand the difference between narrative, dramatic, and film form and structure. Second, to appreciate the influential dramatists of the past whose presence is still being felt such as Moliere and Shakespeare. Third, to understand the form, style, and objectives of the early moderns such as Checkhov, Ibsen, Strindberg, Shaw, and Wilde as well those pre World War II play writers whose form, style and content are influential. In the second semester, we will fulfill the fourth objective: to study the WWII and Post WWII era playwrights and filmmakers of note such as: Williams, Miller, Brecht, and Lorca. We will not read the whole plays or screenplays but representative passages. We will also be restricted to material available on the internet or what can be easily disseminated. Finally, with each issue or play various theoretical methods will be applied and will be included in the study questions.

The following may take one or more weeks.
1. What is the difference between narrative, dramatic, film forms.
2. What are the dramatic genres: comedy, farce, tragedy, melodrama, music drama.
3. Well-made plays and the drama of ideas: Ibsen, Wilde, Shaw, Miller.
4. The Strindberg styles and Williams.
5. Checkhov and Stanislavsky.
6. Brecht and German expressionism.
7. Lyric drama: Lorca,

  100%Grading: Attendance will be taken and three absences or the inability to answer the study questions for three classes will be grounds for failure. The study questions will be used for the midterm and final.
50% Midterm. 50% Final. 5 points will be deducted from the final score for each absence or the inability to answer study questions in class.
