三、教學目標 Objectives | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In this course, you will study language use in various social contexts. For the fall semester, we focus on general issues and major theoretical concepts originating in the western societies, building a foundation for specific case studies in the field. For the spring semester, we will look at various case studies, especially those in East Asian societies, considering their implications for greater Chinese communities and the field of sociolinguistics. Students acquire a basic understanding of how (and if) a language can work under different circumstances. By taking on small projects (collecting samples, conducting interviews and presenting data) you will get a chance to confirm and or challenge the theoretical concepts presented in the texts. Three major areas will be explored: 1) how people with different social identities (e.g. gender, age, class, and ethnicity) converse and how their speech (pronunciation, choice of words, sentence structures) changes in different situations; 2) how discourse is being constructed in newly developed service industries such as dentistry, preventive health care and memorial services for pets; 3) and how language is used pragmatically to accomplish speech acts such as apologies, declarations, requests and threats. |

●整體敘述 Overall Description For this semester, we will introduce the theoretical claims and case studies from various parts of the world. Topics include: language choice (including Computer mediated Communication), language policy and gender. The class is structured with reading, lecture, discussion and group exercise. We will get into exercise and discussion after each topic (40%). In addition, there will be a midterm (in class essay question 30%) and a final presentation (30%). |
