三、教學目標 Objectives | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
We will be studying these plays closely, paying attention to the themes of love. You can use any book of these plays that you can find, but understand they can be different. I will be using the ARDEN SHAKESPEARE. It is helpful if you have a version that includes line numbers. I suggest you first read a Chinese translation of the play, but most of them are not complete and not very good, but they will give you a general idea of the story. In class we will only use the English original.
四、課程內容 Course Description
●整體敘述 Overall Description Requirements for the class: 1. Weekly attendance and participation. I start class on time, and I expect you to be on time as well. If you are frequently late and do not have a good reason, I will ask you not to attend this class. Three absences without a prior excuse and you will be dropped from the course. 2. Oral Report. I will assign each student to one play each semester. You will be required to study a small part of the play, for example, one scene, and discuss it in depth—the action, the characterization, the relations of the characters to each other in the scene, the imagery, the meaning of the dialogue or important monologues in the scene, the importance of the scene to the whole play. You must coordinate your report with the other people in your group so that you do not repeat what others say. You can use outside material to help you understand, but you must express yourself in your own words and examine what your books have, said and see if they make sense to you. They are to help you understand the text in your own way. Anybody who just copies from a book or the internet WILL FAIL THE ORAL REPORT ASSIGNMENT and possibly the class. I will give you the dates for the oral reports. Everyone in the group is expected to be prepared for that date. Usually I introduce the new play first and then we begin the oral report the following week. Be sure you know when your report is due! 3. Midterm and Final Exam. The first semester we will have a midterm covering the first two plays and a final exam covering the second two. The second semester will only have a final exam. These exams will include material covered in class discussion. 4. You can email me questions any time at ctdiamond@hotmail.com |
