Objectives
This course aims to familiarize our 3rd-year English-majors with practical oral English skills used in discussion and presentation speeches, mainly in marketing and business situations. The main purpose is to make students familiar with various considerations of giving speeches, and to practice various discussions and presentations which are useful in their everyday life and future careers. Through meaningful language activities and interesting discussions of different topics, this course teaches students to speak English properly, logically, and confidently. This course not only teaches important aspects of discussion and presentation speech, but also provides a framework for conversational analysis and practice based on much listening and reading materials. Students will get practical and thorough training to use English properly and effectively in such situations as giving speeches, making comments, stating one’s opinion, debating over an issue, and dealing with hesitation strategies and “sticky” situations, etc. On the whole, this course helps students to develop their English proficiency in general, and effective presentation speaking skills in particular. It is hoped that this course may lay a firmer foundation for the students’ senior year. Finally, we believe students will find this course valuable and pleasant.
Course Description
Overall Description
Teaching Plan: This is a one-year course starting from September on the university calendar. We will use Market Leader as our main textbook, but relevant supplementary materials such as news, audio, VCD, and video tapes, class exercises and quizzes will be used when necessary. Each chapter guides students through a warm-up, concepts, helpful expressions and vocabulary, analysis and group discussion, and independent presentation speech. As a general guideline of the course pace, we will cover one topic every two weeks, and there are quizzes along with the course, plus midterm and final exams, which will be conducted in a form of individual presentation or “task” performance. Finally, course contents may alter slightly according to the progress and actual needs.

Class Performance (questions, discussions, reports, participation, etc.) 30%, Mid-term Exam 30%, and Final Exam 40% (Total 100 marks). Attendance is randomly checked. A score of 3 will be deducted every time for being absence without leave from a student’s Class Performance. Being absent four times or more in a single term may cause one to fail this course. An extra score of 1 to 5 may be awarded to the term grade for those of full attendance and active participation. Note: Frequent lateness or sick leave will affect one's final score, while extra credit is given for good classroom participation.

When the marks given for homework or reports are converted to a letter to assign the student a grade, the following system is applied. A—excellent (100—90), B—good (89—80), C—average (79—70), D—poor (69—60), F—failed (59—0). An extra score of 1 to 5 may be awarded to the term grade for those of full attendance and active participation. Evaluation Standards for Assignments or Essays Course assignments are conducted according to the following standard (an average score will be used for different assignments): Grade Deduction or Gain A − 0 + 10 A− − 1 + 9 B+ − 2 + 8 B − 3 + 7 C − 4 + 6 D − 6 + 4 F − 8 + 0--2 No Hand-in − 10 + 0

I am Dr. Byron Gong, the professor who will teach you this course for next academic year. I want to provide you with some advance information about the required course material that we’ll be using in class. These resources will be critical to your success in my class because my test questions and assignments are generally based on the textbook and lecture notes. In addition, you are strongly advised to do the pre-reading of the textbook and other relevant reading by yourself or on the website, which is crucial to your success in this course.

Your course textbook will be available at the first time we meet in class as I have already ordered a bundle of textbooks for the course and the bookstore will deliver them to our classroom. However, if your prefer to purchase a (used) book by yourself, you will still have to purchase the same edition of the textbook.

I spent a great deal of time researching the best course material to use and I believe you’ll benefit greatly from this textbook. The textbook package is an essential part of your classroom experience and a key component to your being prepared and succeeding in this course.

Finally, try to be active in class and you are always welcome to ask me questions. If you have a suggestion or complaint about the course, please feel free to talk with me directly.

I look forward to meeting you in class!

Byron Gong

Other Requirements
You are encouraged to prepare a topic (for a 2-mminute speech) every week.

Students are expected to preview the reading and come to class in time. Participation is important, and students are supposed to join discussions, and complete assignments. Attendance is randomly checked; but those failing to attend this course four times in a single term would be considered absent without leave and their grades would be seriously affected accordingly. They may fail this course if playing truant four times or more in a term.
Active participation is important and will be added to the final grade. An extra score of 1 to 3 may be awarded to the term grade for those of full attendance.
No eating, or chewing gum in this class.

Policy for Excused Absence
You may request an excused absence once per semester with explanation. Just e-mail me and specify the date that you will be absent from class with good reasons. If you plan to be absent on the day of a test or an exam, however, you must provide an explanation and make an arrangements for a makeup test or exam. Please see me in my office (R0920) for an excused absence from a test or exam. If you must be absent for more than one session, your grade may be affected. Your grade may be lowered one letter for each additional absence after the excused absence.

Finally, try to be active in class and you are always welcome to ask me questions. If you have a suggestion or complaint about the course, please feel free to talk with me directly.
