三、教學目標 Objectives
Description
This course is for students with high-intermediate English proficiency. The motivation of these students for learning English is relatively high; therefore, relatively challenging academically oriented articles can be taught in the course. At this level, teacher uses English entirely as the language of instruction. The readings may contain specific controversial and thought-provoking topics which will lend themselves to conversation and group presentations in the second part of the course. An integration of critical thinking and an enhanced focus on academic skills such as vocabulary in context, making inferences, note taking and expressing their own points of view are encouraged. Outside readings are highly recommended which include simple novels and/or intermediate to high-intermediate levels of graded readers. After one year of reading, thinking and speaking in English, together with multiple exposures to cultural contexts and information, most of the students are expected to be able to even express their opinions in simple paragraphs on contemporary issues. The targeted vocabulary at the end of the two-semester course generally consists of over 3000 to 4000 English words.

Method of instruction
The language of instruction will be English as the instructor understands how important it is for students to be immersed in an all-English environment. Even though students will have difficulties in the beginning she has found that, in the long run, students can greatly profit by it. The basic instructional method will be discussion of text in groups of twos, threes or fours, or class as a whole. It will be entirely student- centered where they will be expected to ask and answer their own questions in English.
