三、教學目標 Objectives
Objectives:
The goal of this class is to assist students in developing their ability to speak English as a primary language for the purpose of both self-expression and communication. Students should become comfortable users of English in expressing their opinions both orally and in writing with regard to the reading material as well as a variety of everyday situations. Students should be able to read in English for both educational purposes and personal pleasure without having to rely on Chinese translations.

The primary objective of this class is to help students to improve English reading and conversation skills for both academic and non-academic purposes. In order to do this, students will
•Improve fluency in reading and conversation (read and converse with increasing fluency as the course progresses)
•Increase skills for reading and conversation (understand purposes for communication and use appropriate strategies in various reading and conversation situations).

After completing this course, students should be able to
•communicate in English comfortably with non-Chinese speakers
•communicate in English with English department teachers about course material and class issues
•read extensively in English (be able to read some texts at length without the use of a dictionary)
•read intensively in English (be able to read and analyze more difficult texts with the use of aids, such as dictionaries)
•consciously apply reading skills appropriate for a wide variety of texts and purposes.
•format papers in English correctly and clearly
•write papers in English that clearly and accurately communicate personal ideas
•give appropriate credit to sources when writing or talking about ideas from reading.
 
 
四、課程內容 Course Description
整體敘述 Overall Description
This class will be organized around the readings. One day each week will be centered on the articles and stories specifically, while the other day will focus on discussing ideas related to the readings as well as more general conversation.

Students will be responsible to do weekly reading, writing, and conversation assignments, both in class and as homework.
